MEGA Trainer Exercise Equipment
Click here if you don't have time to read the review.
MEGA have created the MEGA Trainer as an alternative to the Total Gym 3000 but at a much cheaper price.
Like the Total Gym series and a few others that have popped up since the Total Gym became so popular, the MEGA Trainer uses body weight as resistance. You can lift as little as 4% of your body weight up to a maximum of 69% depending upon the angle of the glide board (bench). You can choose from 11 different angles. If you feel that 69% of your body weight is still a bit light, don't worry. Its possible to add an extra 100lbs of weight as long as the total doesn't exceed 350lbs.
There are plenty of exercises that can be performed using the MEGA Trainer which include all parts of the body. You are really only limited by your imagination. But you can even get by without your imagination because the MEGA Trainer comes with a training video and other support materials.
Equipment
frame and glide board that are actually about 6" longer than similar gyms (see "Pros" below for our opinion on that)
nylon cables
transportation wheels for moving the MEGA Trainer when it is folded up
training video
14 different training programs
workout charts
Size
Folded - 20"(width) x 14"(length) x 49"(height)
Unfolded (ready to use) - 20"(width) x 94"(length) x 48"(height)
It weighs about 95 lbs.
Warranty
1 year
Pros
The MEGA Trainer has one distinct advantage over the Total Gym 3000:
that advantage is the long frame and glide board. The makers of MEGA Trainer say you can use this gym even if you are up to 6'7" but we think that's more like 6'5" to 6'6". But even if you aren't that tall the extra length means you can get better support for your head in lying exercises
Other pros include:
you can use your legs to spot some of your upper body exercises
this gym is tiny when its folded up
compared to the Total Gym 3000 it is cheap
if you are inexperienced, you can get a good idea of what to do from the support materials
there is no assembly, it arrives ready to use
its light
its quiet (except for maybe your grunting!)
Cons
We here at Home Gym Review find that a lot of the cons we listed here a common to all gyms of this type not exclusively to the MEGA Trainer:
if you have trained at a regular gym before and you're expecting the same feel of work out here, you may be disappointed. This gym can give you an all over workout but you'll find the angles of movement are different. That can be a little off putting if you have expectations of it being like a regular gym. All gliding gyms are like that
in sitting exercises where you are facing away from the pulleys there is no back support so half the struggle is just keeping your self bent at the waist
the maximum resistance level isn't very high
Overall
The MEGA Trainer is definitely a worthy alternative to the Total Gym 3000, especially if you are tall or on a budget. The quality isn't quite as good but you expect that at the cheaper price.
If you don't have much free space or you move a lot or your neighbors can hear every sound that comes out of your apartment or you want a quick no fuss workout or you are a beginner or you are not interested in building the strength to lift parked cars then the MEGA Trainer maybe what your looking for.
