Drink bottle because

  • you will need to replace lost fluids

  • you don't want to be banging a glass against your teeth because your arms are trembling from a killer biceps set

  • those muscles we desire are mostly filled with H2O

  • if you don't drink enough water your body will actually retain water to beat the drought. This means you will look soft and undefined

  • you can close the lid and prevent spills

Training towel because

  • you will hopefully be using your new home gym for a long time. So wiping up your sweat and covering the bench with a towel will keep it clean and looking new longer

  • if a piece of equipment becomes wet from a spilt drink or your sweat it may be hazardous

  • if you train with someone else its polite to clean up your sweat after each set

  • if your sweat gets under the paint it will cause rust

Training diary because

  • when you are starting off you will need to recall what exercise you did, how much you lifted and how many times you lifted as a guide for what to do this time

  • sometimes you will feel strong and other times you won't. Or you will get a huge pump (your muscles feel very full of blood) but other times not. If you have recorded things like sleep and food as well you will be able to see which combination of conditions will give you the most rewarding workout

  • once you have established what is best for you, you can stop using the training diary if you like. But I have a friend who has been writing in his diary every workout for 25 years!!

  • write in your diary between exercises. Don't wait until the end because you either won't do it or you will forget what you did
